Mahogany wood is classified into three divisions. They are : Mahogany Honduras, African , and Crotch. The botanical name given to Mahogany African is 'Khaya spp'. It's color is a reddish brown or sometimes it's colored light brown. The characteristics of this Mahogany African is it has grains that interlock and it's surface is sometimes rough though it is tight and straight. The other names that are given to this type of wood is Ghana, Nigerian, Lagos, Ivory coast, and Mahogany. It has a fair workability, while it's finishing qualities and durability are good. It's used in boat building, furniture, joinery, plywood and veneer. It is moderately priced.
Another type of mahogany wood is Mahogany Honduras. It's botanical name being 'Swietenia Macrophylla'. It is also called in Latin America as Caoba, and in areas where French is spoken, it is called as Acajou, is also called as South American Mahogany. Brazilian Mahogany, Peruvian Mahogany are names given for mahogany wood after it comes from those particular places. It is spread out in central and South America and also in some caribbean islands.
Oak Veneer Bookcase
This species is protected in Honduras and El Salvador but has become extinct or endangered in some parts of South America. 150' is the height of the tree with diameter of the trunk being 6'. This type of mahogany grows in dry forests and stands with high elevation. One cannot find pockets and voids in Mahogany Honduras and it's texture is fine even and straight grained. It's reddish brown in color, sometimes upto medium red, which with the lapse of time darkens to a deep reddish brown.
It has an excellent workability and this wood is one of the best used for the purposes of planning, cutting and machining. A low angle and sharp tools are to be used while planning with this wood with a pattern which is wavy grain. This can be easily and efficiently sanded. Edges that are routered are sharp and crisp. On a lathe this type of wood turns well.
It has excellent finishing qualities as common stains and finishes of a wide range are accepted by it. It has very good durability. This wood is dense and strong. If it is hit sharply by a solid blunt object it dents.The durability is slightly less than red oak. This is an excellent choice for boat building and outdoor applications like patio furniture for it is combined with strength and rot resistant properties. One of the popular wooden boats by name Chris Craft were built in mahogany till it was replaced by fibre glass in early 1960.
Without appreciable warping and checking this wood can be air-seasoned and kiln dried. After it's manufacture the movement is small. It has excellent stability in kiln dried lumber. It is used in cabinet-making, turning, boat building, plywood, outdoor furniture and fine furniture.
For many South American countries this has become valuable cash crop. It's demand is met through plantation farming. It is priced moderately.
