How to Avoid Tear Out When Cutting Plywood

No matter what kind of woodworking you do, at some point you're going to be using plywood. Whether you're building cabinets and using commercially available plywood, make your own veneer, or buy veneer to apply to a plywood substrate, sooner or later you're going to have to deal with cutting plywood.

The biggest problem woodworkers have with cutting plywood, especially when cross-cutting, is that the veneer often splinters out along the cut line. So much for that expensive piece of veneer!

Here are some ways to avoid this:

Let's first look at the tools used to cut plywood, both for cross cutting and ripping. Large 4 x 8 sheets of plywood are most often ripped using the table saw. When ripping or cross cutting on the table saw the good side should always be facing up. This action alone will prevent the majority of splintering on the good side. To be sure of this though, two things should be done to your table saw. First, you need to be using a sharp 40 tooth combination blade, (my favorite is the Forrest Woodworker II) or a high alternate bevel grind blade, a specialty blade designed to cut melamine and veneered wood without splintering. Second, your table saw needs to be tuned up. By this I mean that the blade needs to be parallel to the fence. On the side facing up, if you're only getting tear out on one side of the blade, this is probably the problem. If you're getting tear out on both sides of the blade, your blade is wobbling due to being bent, or the arbor isn't running true. It helps to have a dial indicator to tune up your table saw.

For cross cutting large sheets of plywood, more times than not, I will use a circular saw. If you think of the circular saw as a upside down table saw, it will make sense to make sure you cut with the good side facing down.

Here's four tips for using a circular saw to get a clean cross cut on plywood:

1) The same blade considerations we talking about for the table saw apply to the circular saw.

2) Score the plywood first by setting the height of the blade just deep enough to score the top veneer. Then go back and cutting all the through. This method works very well if you use a fence so you can make the exact same cut twice. Free handing a cut like this won't work.

3) A method I like to use to help prevent splintering on the bottom side when using a circular saw is to use a backer board. Use a sacrificial sheet of cheap MDF underneath your plywood. Lower the blade to just cut below the thickness of the plywood. The MDF will support the fibers of the veneer, keeping them from tearing out.

4) Another trick is to use a strip of painters tape or masking tape along the cut line. The tape acts like the back board in the previous method. A work of caution here. Don't use tape that is real sticky, it will end up pealing up the wood fibers underneath, exactly what you were trying to avoid. Which ever type tape you use, be sure you remove it as soon as the cut has been made to prevent it from melting to the plywood from the heat of the blade.

The Most Common Woods Used For Woodworking

You might have some questioning concerning the kind of wood you should be using to build your woodworking project. There are different aspects to consider before deciding on a specific type of wood such as: your personal style, the ambiance you would like to create, and your current finances. Because walnut wood can cause allergies and asthma, anyone working with this kind of wood is advised to always wear gloves and a dust mask.

Mahogany

Mahogany is famous for its distinctive pink coloring, which evolves into a deep red-brownish as the wood grows older. This type of wood is among the most valuable wood varieties in the world. This wood offers very few knots or voids which grants the wood a gentle, even grain appearance that is ideally suited for fine wood furnishings and wood craft. The mahogany wood tree grows very large which allows the manufacturing of large and continuous boards. Woodworkers will use this type of wood to build tables, desks, and other furniture without joints. It is also easy to work with, is strong and durable, easy to sand, creates clean cuts and is easy to turn on a wood lathe. Unfortunately, it is highly priced but considering that mahogany furniture can last a lifetime, it is well worth the expense.

The Joy of Woodworking

There it was. A beautiful cabinet that stood tall and deep with a beautiful wood grain finish that was as smooth as glass to the touch. Large deep shelves made up the bulk of the cabinet. Inlaid panel doors enclosed a velvet lined storage area near the bottom and a scrolled façade crowned the top. It was a beauty to behold and I experienced a great deal of satisfaction and pride having planned and created my first wood piece.

There is a certain feeling that nothing else can match when you create something beautiful out of a chunk of wood. With a wide variety of species, wood lends itself to a countless number of uses that is enjoyed by both beginning and advanced woodworkers. Woodworking is a relatively inexpensive and ready source of material that instills pride and a sense of accomplishment to the woodworker as he or she creates and finishes a given project. Woodworking can also be a therapeutic source of relief after a stressful days work. Few things in life offer the satisfaction of woodworking!

A Brief History of Woodworking

Woodworking as a craft can be traced back as far as the Egyptian and Chinese civilizations. Ancient Egyptians created pieces of furniture from wood and these have been found preserved in tombs. Mortise and tendon joints are attested as early as 3100 BC. Ancient Chinese furniture is famous for its intricate glueless and nailless joinery. Later in the New Kingdom period, 16th to 11th century BC, animal glue came to be used.

Throughout the years as human skills developed and with advancements in techniques and design, woodworking became works of art. Skills such as parquetry, marquetry and wood carving became part of the beautiful concepts in the art of woodworking. Today with advancements in tools, materials and the availability of easy-to-follow plans, anyone can experience the satisfaction and joy of woodworking!

Wood Types

Time and space for this article does not allow for an in-depth discussion of the best wood types to be used; however most woodworking projects fall into three different categories; softwoods, hardwoods and plywood, the latter being manufactured panels. Most beginning woodworkers start out using softwoods. The more common softwoods come from trees that are cone-bearing, such as evergreens. Softwood such as pine and spruce are easy to work with and don't require expensive tools to obtain a good result. Most softwood tends to absorb moisture when left in the outside weather, so a durable finish should be used when creating outdoor projects.

Hardwood comes from trees that shed their foliage annually. The more common hardwoods are cherry, oak, poplar, walnut, maple, ash and birch. Stains and clear finish coatings accentuate the grain patterns of hardwoods better than softwood, thereby making hardwood a desired material for high quality furniture and smaller pieces of art. Cutting and working with hardwoods require more expensive and very sharp tools.

Plywood is made from uneven layers of wood laminated together or a type of manufactured sheet. Plywood can be purchased with a thin finished layer of hardwood called 'veneers' and are great for cabinet or large pieces requiring flat surfaces. Advancements in manufacturing and technology have allowed for the production of 'man-made' wood materials; however for the purpose of this article we prefer to stick with nature's wood.

Working with Nature's Wood

Most wood that is available for purchasing today has already been dried and ready for woodworking. Freshly cut wood needs to 'season' for a minimum of six months in a specially prepared dry environment, so for this article we will address working with wood that has already been properly dried.

Choosing the right wood for your project is critical to the look of the finished product. For the sake of argument, we are assuming you want your finished project to show off the natural grain of the wood. A great source for previewing different wood species before you make your final selection can be found at Woodworker's Central.com. Woodworker's Central has an online directory exhibiting some of the world's most popular woods with a full-sized photo for each species.

Smoothing wood prior to applying finish coatings is best done by sanding. Sandpaper is available in grit sizes. Sandpaper with a larger grit is best for removing rough or dented areas, while paper with a smaller or finer grit works well to get a final smooth surface. Generally the harder the wood species, the more sanding that will be required. For projects that require a lot of sanding, there are many different power tools from which to choose.

For a natural look to the final finish, a clear coat of varnish should be applied using a soft brush. A deeper rich finish can be accomplished by applying several thin coats of varnish. Each coat should be allowed to dry before applying the next. Sanding between each coat with a fine grit sanding paper will help bring out the luster of the final finish. Commercial stains are also available for adding color and bringing out the natural grain of the wood. Stain should be applied in even coats. Deeper color can be achieved with multiple coats, however each coat should be allowed time to soak into the grain. Once the desire color is achieved, a final clear hard coat of varnish, lacquer or shellac can be applied to preserve the finish.

It is interesting how, just when a market becomes stagnant, someone comes along to freshen it up. So it is true with a corner desk. If it is hit sharply by a solid blunt object it dents.The durability is slightly less than red oak. This is an excellent choice for boat building and outdoor applications like patio furniture for it is combined with strength and rot resistant properties. One of the popular wooden boats by name Chris Craft were built in mahogany till it was replaced by fibre glass in early 1960.

Without appreciable warping and checking this wood can be air-seasoned and kiln dried. After it's manufacture the movement is small. It has excellent stability in kiln dried lumber. It is used in cabinet-making, turning, boat building, plywood, outdoor furniture and fine furniture.

For many South American countries this has become valuable cash crop. It's demand is met through plantation farming. It is priced moderately.
